MISSION & HISTORY
The DC Coalition to End Sexual Violence seeks to enhance the capacity of organizations and agencies to strategically partner and effectively address the needs of sexual violence victim-survivors in Washington, DC, through education, training and technical assistance, advocacy, and policy.
The DC Coalition to End Sexual Violence (DCCESV) was founded in 2016 as a groundbreaking partnership between two nationally recognized leaders in the movement to end sexual violence: MCSR (formerly known as Men Can Stop Rape) and DC Rape Crisis Center (DCRCC).
MCSR brought to the table its unparalleled expertise as the country’s premier organization focused on primary prevention of gender-based violence, rooted in engaging men and boys as allies. DCRCC, founded in 1972, was the first rape crisis center in the United States, and has remained a trailblazer in trauma-informed, survivor-centered advocacy and care.
Together, these two organizations envisioned a coordinated, community-informed response to sexual violence in the District—one that not only supports survivors but also shifts the systems, policies, and culture that allow sexual violence to persist.
From its inception, DCCESV has worked to strengthen the District’s capacity to prevent and respond to sexual violence, foster cross-sector collaboration, and amplify the voices of survivors.
Today, the Coalition serves as a unifying force across DC’s diverse communities and service providers, leading the charge to create a safer, more just city for all.
